Keppel cleans Qatar’s water
by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer on Saturday, 06 October 2007
Singapore's Keppel Seghers has won a US $1.5 billion (QAR 5.4 billion) design-build-operate contract for what is being billed as the largest waste water treatment and reuse plant in the Middle East.
The Doha North Sewage Treatment plant in Qatar, which will be constructed in four phases, will treat waste water of up to 439,000m³ a day by the time it's completed in 2010. The treated water will be recycled for irrigation purposes.
The client is the Public Works Authority (Ashghal).
The contract also involves the construction of a sludge treatment plant, which will receive and treat sludge from waste water treatment plants across Qatar.
The treated sludge can be used as an organic fertiliser or as a supplementary green source of energy. Keppel will operate and maintain the facility for 10 years post-construction.
"We are pleased that our innovative technology proposals for both the water and thermal treatment processes for this project were very highly rated by Ashghal," said Chua CheeWui, CEO, Keppel Seghers.
"This helped us to stand out from the competition. Keppel will continue to invest in its research and development efforts to further strengthen its leadership position in water and thermal recycling technologies."
The project is Keppel's second major contract win in Qatar. The company was awarded two contracts worth $1.7 billion in October 2006 for the engineering, procurement and construction of an integrated solid waste management facility as part of the Integrated Domestic Solid Waste Management Centre project.
The projects are part of Ashghal's five-year plan to boost the country's water supply. The authority plans 22 related projects across the country.
