Mohammed Alshaya is set to join the prestigious line-up of leading retail industry figures responsible for selecting the winners of the World Retail Awards in April next year, it has been revealed.

In his role on the jury, the MH Alshaya Company chairman will sit alongside key players from global retailers, FMCG companies and suppliers at the event, to be held at Barcelona's CCIB International Convention Centre.

Alshaya Retail operates more than 40 international concepts across the Middle East, Turkey, Cyprus and Russia in fashion, health and beauty, optics, pharmaceutical, sports fashion and casual dining sectors.

In addition to Mohammed Alshaya, the grand jury will include Duncan Angove, general manager and senior VP - Oracle Retail, Ravi Dahr, director and professor of Marketing - Yale Centre for Customer Insights, and Lucy Neville-Rolfe, corporate and legal affairs director, Tesco.

After the success of the inaugural World Retail Awards in March this year, the organisers have announced that the 2008 competition site is now open for online entries, with the closing date confirmed as November 9.

Entries are now invited for the categories of Responsible Retailer of the Year, Innovative Format of the Year, Emerging Market Retailer of the Year, Marketing Campaign of the Year, Retail Destination of the Year, Employer of the Year, and Multi-channel Retailer of the Year.

Ian McGarrigle from the World Retail Awards said, "There has long been the need for a global event to celebrate and highlight some of the outstanding practices and significant progress made by retailers around the world every day.

"In 2007, not only were the number and standard of entries beyond our expectations, but the feedback that we've received on the impact of the awards on winners' businesses has been incredibly positive.  We are delighted to be building on this success in 2008, and look forward to generating even greater excitement."

More than 700 members of the global retail community attended the previous Awards ceremony, with winners including IKEA for Multi Market Retailer of the Year and Pantaloon (India) for Emerging Market Retailer of the Year.

The winners for 2008 will be announced at the World Retail Awards gala dinner, on 10 April 2008 at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC) in Barcelona.

The awards - organised in association with Oracle - form a major part of the World Retail Congress programme, held from April 9 to 11.
