Bahrain orders improvements at Tubli sewage treatment
by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer on Wednesday, 17 October 2007
Bahrain's Ministry of Works and Housing has signed a US $3 million agreement with a German company to improve the efficiency of the Tubli sewage treatment plant.
Under the agreement, the as yet unnamed company will provide consultancy, conduct scientific and technical studies and a report on the plant's environmental impact, according to the Bahrain Tribune.
Environmentalists have been alarmed by the effect treated sewage water from the plant entering Tubli Bay is having on local marine life. After a black patch of discharges surfaced in July, the Bahraini cabinet implemented measures to protect the bay, revive its marine life and purify it by pumping in cleaner water. Minister Fahmi bin Ali Al Jowder said the ministry was keen to ensure the plant operated to global specifications.
The Berlin-based company will also provide preliminary designs for the expansion and development of the plant by the first half of 2009.
