High school teams battle at Robotics Olympiad
by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer on Monday, 22 October 2007
Thirty-two teams of high school students from across the UAE competed at the UAE National Robotics Olympiad, held at Sharjah Higher Colleges of Technology, Men's College last week.
The National Robotics Olympiad, which is in its second year, gives teams of students the opportunity to build and program robots to compete in set challenges or open competitions. Teams work closely with event organizers, learning solutions provider Edutech Middle East, and sponsors to create the competition entries.
The Olympiad was won by Our Own High School Al Warqa'a, who won the Robo Ambulating Rally contest, and Dubai Modern High School, who won in the open contest.
The winning teams will now go on to compete at the World Robotics Olympiad (WRO) which is being held in Taipei, in November.
Assistant undersecretary of the Ministry of Education, Ali Maehad Al Sueeyday commented: "We at the Ministry believe that the field of robotics possesses great potential as a tool to hone our students' creative thinking and mechanical skills. We are indeed proud to be a part of this event, and in line with our primary objective of promoting a well-rounded educational system for our youth, we are looking forward to supporting the organiser in its goal of increasing the number of participants in the next UAE National Robotic Olympiad to 100 teams."
The Olympiad was sponsored by Sharjah Higher Colleges of Technology, WRO, Gulf Educational Supplies Show (GESS) and LEGO.
