Singapore sling

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Tuesday, 23 October 2007

This month Avi Bhojani, CEO of BatesPanGulf tells us how he like to travel.

What is your favourite destination?

I've been lucky enough to travel around a lot, both for work and pleasure. I guess I would have to say that my favourite place that I like to go to is Singapore. There is something really special about the place. It gives me a buzz. I'll be honest, through the nineties, every time I wanted to get some new ideas, I just flew to Singapore. And it worked I came up with several ideas each time I went there.

Why Singapore?

It has a certain degree of orderliness, a certain degree of hygiene and cleanliness and a great sense of ethics.

Do you go there often?

In the last two years maybe I've gone there three times, not often enough.

Where do you stay when you go there - surely Raffles?

Many people ask about Raffles but I'm not into that whole "experience" of a hotel. I'm into convenience rather than luxury so I am happy with Intercontinental in Singapore. I will go back to the same hotel each time for many years. It is about getting in easily, getting out and having somewhere decent in between, not much else.

So what do you do when you go on holiday? Do you relax or do you just go there to come up with more ideas?

Relax? Me? I tend to fly at night, so if I'm planning a trip to London, I take the 1:20am flight and get in at 5:50am. My first appointment in Mayfair
will be at 10am and then my last appointment will finish about the time I am flying back. In Singapore I have to do a daytime flight so I end up staying the night.

You don't like the whole shopping thing?

No, shopping is not for me. If I want to de-stress I use the Spa.That's the thing I like doing most to wind down.

Are you a big fan of flying?

No. For me it's a convenience, it's about getting from place A to place B in an agreeable manner. I don't like to be fussed over. I just want to be myself and get service as and when I want it. I'll ask you for what I want, just don't bother me.
