Secrets of my success: Avi Bhojani

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Sunday, 28 October 2007

If you work for Avi Bhojani, Group CEO of Bates PanGulf, you had better be prepared for some long shifts. "I'm very driven when I'm onto something, so working closely with me can be a heavy experience but I expect people around me to be driven too. People I work with or that I'm in contact with find that they're getting calls from me at 11pm or SMSs at 6am," he says.

Tough stuff, but then the results suggest Bhojani knows what he's doing. Bates PanGulf is in its 26th year, and the integrated marketing, advertising and PR company has seen revenues top the US$30m mark, with US$40m expected next year.

Bhojani has been at the helm for several years, reinventing himself and the company to keep in tune with the market. "You have to know what you want and then go out and get it, otherwise one of your competitors will," he says.

There's no doubting that passion lies firmly behind Avi Bhojani's success and he makes no secret of the fact that he demands more of the same from his team - even those that quit his company. "The fact is when a person experiences an organisation and moves on and wants to come back, they tend to value the virtues of the organisation a bit more. It's not about personal loyalties, it's about loyalty to the organisation and we're fortunate with that," he says.

Bhojani now spends his time cultivating new ideas, as the company's rapid growth shows no sign of stopping. As for Bhojani himself, the fun has only just begun. "Even if I was offered US$500m I wouldn't sell out because I have never been so motivated to work. It just wouldn't make sense to stop what I am doing. Part of me feels like I have only just started," he says.

Avi Bhojani will be appearing at the Arabian Business Media & Marketing Conference in Dubai in November. Details can be found at www.arabianbusiness.com.
