Tripods create a stable shooting platform for cameras and camcorders. As they vary in size, weight and price to suit different camera requirements and budgets, it is essential that cameramen choose them with great care. Here, we bring you a selection of the latest tripod systems launched for lightweight cameras.

Manfrotto 503 Fluid Head

In recent years, Manfrotto's 503 fluid head has achieved significant success in the video industry. After the big improvement with the 501HDV head, Manfrotto has announced that it has also taken the 503 to the next level, launching the new 503HDV, designed specifically for HDV professional shooters.

Targeting the needs of professional videographers, the new 503HDV pro fluid head boasts several new features added to the fluidity of the existing 503. It is ergonomic, easy-to-use and functional; its features include large ergonomic locks and knobs allowing for a more solid grip and better control.

For enhanced ease of use, the tilt lock and friction controls are located on the left side of the head. It has improved and adjustable counterbalance capacity: an adjustable switch controls the counterbalance settings, allowing the user to adjust the system to accommodate various payloads for different filming needs. The counterbalance system can be adjusted to four positions ensuring both smoother tilt movements and greater equipment safety. In addition, it has an illuminated levelling bubble - making it easy for videographers to level the camera in low-light conditions.

Vinten PROTOUCH range

The Vinten Protouch range was introduced to appeal to those working in event videography and the corporate sector, enabling videographers to maintain a professional look and feel to their work while managing a tight budget. The new addition to the range is the Pro-6HDV pan and tilt system, which was demonstrated at IBC 2007. The Pro-6HDV is available as an off-the-shelf head or incorporated into two lightweight systems with the Vinten Pozi-Loc tripod, a branded black fabric system case and the standard floor spreader or a new lightweight mid-level spreader that offers a much wider range of stable footprints for any location or terrain. It combines the practical functionality of the Vision range with the reliability and stability of the Pozi-loc tripod.
