Gulf Air has been stricken with financial and managerial problems over the last year, losing up to $1 million a day.

Six Gulf Air employees have pleaded not guilty in Manama's Lower Criminal Court to defrauding the troubled airline that is said to be losing up to $1 miillion a day.

Each staff member has been charged with forgery and fraud after allegedly over-claiming for expenses on work-related trips, Bahrain's Gulf Daily News reported on Wednesday.

The charges relate to three different occasions on which the six stayed in hotels overseas and allegedly convinced hotel staff to give them invoices showing their stay cost more than it actually did, according to the newspaper.

On the first trip in 2005, three of them allegedly pocketed 106.4 Bahraini dinars ($282) each and four of them allegedly pocketed 167.25 dinars ($443) each on the second trip last year.

Four of them allegedly attempted the same feat this year, but were caught when they tried to claim their expenses back from accounts.

The Lower Criminal Court on Tuesday adjourned the case until January 29 in order to allow the defence time to fully prepare.

The Public Prosecution had earlier said it was investigating allegations that the defendants had cheated Haj pilgrims by overcharging them for hotels and pocketing the difference.
