On October 31, one of the world's top auction houses, Christie's, put US$30m in international art and jewels on the block at Jumeirah Emirates Towers. Christie's also displayed an additional US$21.4m in jewelry and impressionist pictures, which made the largest and highest value selection of art and jewellery that has ever been exhibited in the Middle East.

Collectors and enthusiasts can still raise the paddle November 1 at 6.30pm at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers. On sale are works by UAE nationals, Syrian, Lebanese, Egyptians, Iranians, and Western artists spanning several periods. Among the top pieces available are: Ahmed Moustafa's Qur'anic Polyptych of Nine Panels (estimate US$300,000-350,000), completed in 1995; Charles Hossein Zenderoudi has four outstanding works including Mir + 54 + BZ + S, painted in 1962 (estimate: US$140,000-180,000) and First Name, 1972 (estimate: US$80,000-100,000); and Parviz Tanavoli's standing poet (estimate: US$120,000-150,000) executed in 2006 in bronze.

"Christie's dedication to the growth of the Middle East art and collecting market is tangible as we deliver the broadest selection of rare and museum-quality pieces, as well as international sale highlights for exhibition, in our third series of sales in the region," said Jussi Pylkännen, president of Christie's Middle East, and auctioneer for the art sale.

"Since we opened our office in the UAE in 2005, Christie's has seen a 39% increase in Middle Eastern buying in our international sales by established and new collectors, and a 55% increase in buying in our international sales to date this year, when compared with 2006", continued Pylkännen.

The auction house also unveiled the first real-time multimedia auction service, Christie's LIVETM in Dubai. Collectors in the region will soon be able to participate in future auctions from the comfort of their home.
