The iconic Dusit Dubai is set to be renamed ‘Dusit Thani Dubai' after the Thai-based hotel company announced a global rebranding programme.

Dusit will now be known as Dusit International after the rebranding.

Middle East regional vice president Sam-Erik Ruttmann said the company was committed to the region, and to positioning itself as a "reputable international brand".

"Expansion plans in the region are progressing rapidly, and we are devoted to continuing our niche in delivering the finest Thai hospitality," he said.

Dubai International senior vice president Octavio Gamarra said the timing was right for a global outlook.

"We have reached the tipping point where to present ourselves as a truly international name is not only desirable, but logical," he said.

"We had achieved prominence, prestige and respect among the Asian hospitality industry, but did not want to rest on our laurels. Instead, we wanted to face the very exciting challenges of moving further in the international arena."

Around the region, Dusit plans to open the 146-room Dusit Residence, Dubai Marina in 2008; the Dusit Palm Jumeirah Island - including a two hotels and a residence - in 2010; and the Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi, set to open in 2010.

Ruttmann also indicated that he was on the lookout for properties to add to the company's portfolio under the ‘dusitD2 hotels and resorts' brand, which is geared towards "the new generation of business and leisure travellers".
