Emaar Middle East has unveiled the first phase of its US $1.6 billion (SR6 billion) Jeddah Gate project in Saudi Arabia.

Designs for the 12 million m2 mixed-use community have been drawn up by architectural firm, HOK.

Phase one is spread over two sites in downtown Jeddah, with close rail links to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah. The first site spans an area of 413,000m2, while the second is 140,000m2.

This part of the project will include Abraj Al Hilal, a three residential tower project. The towers will range from 19 to 22 storeys in height.

The entire development will comprise 6,000 residential units, commercial towers and a range of cultural, retail and leisure outlets.

"Jeddah Gate forms a key component of Jeddah's new downtown area, and is one of Saudi Arabia's top development projects to create a central business district in the city," said Alaa Abdullah Saed, chief executive officer, Emaar Middle East.

"Emaar's project is built to become the new centre of the city and drive inward investments to the Kingdom."

Emaar's other major project in Saudi Arabia is King Abdullah Economic City. The project is worth $26.6 billion and is being built along 35km of the Red Sea coast. It will be spread over 55 million m2.
