Satellite broadcaster Showtime Arabia has chosen systems provider Sony Professional Solutions Middle East to build for it a new transmission facility designed specifically for sports broadcasting, in a deal worth US$6 million. The contract will also see Showtime supplied with two 4-camera complete HD-capable Sports production studios, both of which will be dedicated to exclusive coverage of the English Premier League in both English and Arabic.

The High-definition (HD) capable transmission facility is a ‘tape-less' system which includes transmission and edit suites, and the support of voice-over positions. The Sport production studios are also HD-capable, and come equipped with Sony's new Full HD professional LCD monitors.

"After an extensive search to find and implement the best technology, we are pleased to team up with Sony Professional Solutions who are working with us effectively to provide our customers with the very best in football coverage and analysis," said Mike Whittaker, Showtime's director of technology.

"Showtime selected Sony, not only because of their confidence in our solution, design and integration capabilities, but also the value we are able to offer through our local office support and training. We are certainly all looking forward to kick-off in August," added Karl Hijazi, professional services manager at Sony Professional Solutions.

Sony has also opened a new HD training centre at their Dubai Media City location, which provides broadcast operational and technical product training for Sony customers, in addition to hosting seminars and courses.
