Tokyo-based fruit and vegetable distributor Sun Globe Food today launched its Oishii Nippon (Tasty Japan) food promotion campaign in Dubai.

Sun Globe Foods, a government exports promotion enterprise, has worked with Japanese food importer and distribution company Daisho Emirates, in its move to capitalise on the UAE's lucrative food market.

"Considering Dubai is the business hub of the region, the government of Japan is keen to invest in the lucrative and ever-expanding food market of the UAE. The Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is currently working on a plan to increase export volume to the UAE," commented HE Kobayashi Hiroyasu.

Anzai Yoshikuni, president of Sun Globe Food said the move is a consolidated effort to introduce Japan's quality benchmark and offer healthy food to people in the UAE.

Sun Globe Food will offer premium products including fresh vegetables, processed food including miso, soy sauce and juices, and Udon noodles. The company is also looking into the potential for Japanese seafood exports in the UAE.

Jannie Holtzhauzen, CEO of Spinneys said today the chain has encouraged the move as it has a longstanding tradition of offering consumers fresh produce of the highest quality.

"Characteristics such as size, colour, texture, aroma and taste convey the exceptional nature of the produce, which is air-freighted from Japan to retain maximum freshness. Spinneys is proud to have been selected as the exclusive supplier of Japanese fruit and vegetables in the UAE," he said.

Daisho recently opened an office in Dubai and a warehouse in Sharjah. The company plans to expand its presence in the region early next year. Major export markets for the products are Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan, Russia and the US.

Established in 1978, Sun Globe Food started out supplying lettuce and sliced tomatoes to fast food giant McDonald's in Japan. The company specialises in organically produced fresh fruit and vegetables including Japanese apples, pears and peaches.
