by Lynne Roberts on Thursday, 15 November 2007
Abu Dhabi has recruited its first female Emirati taxi driver, a newspaper reported yesterday.
Sobha Yacoub has already been offered work by seven cab firms, after receiving a licence to drive taxis in the UAE capital, according to a report Al-Ittihad newspaper published by AFP. The job of taxi driver in the emirates is generally carried out by Asian nationals, the article reported.
More than 300 taxis took to the streets of Abu Dhabi earlier this month when the city launched the first phase of its new fleet. A further 800 vehicles will be launched by the end of 2008, taking the total of taxis on the road close to 7,000.

Is this such a news story? I travel to Dubai frequently and have on a couple of occasions been taken from the airport by female taxi drivers. Is the "news" factor in this story the fact that female emancipation finally hitting other parts of the Emirates.
