Residents of and visitors to Bahrain can expect to pay 85% more for taxi rides after a traffic order was issued by the Kingdom's cabinet on Wednesday aimed at securing better living conditions for drivers and safer cars for passengers.

The cabinet, who had not altered the price structure in over a decade, cited the need for a newer fleet and fairer compensation for drivers as the main reasons behind the hike in prices, reported the Khaleej Times.

"The increase meets the economic growth in the Kingdom and the needs of drivers as the last changes in the fares were made in 1996 and it is not suitable anymore to the living conditions and the nature of the market," said Farooq Al Muawda, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior.

"Bahrain is witnessing rapid economic growth, so we need to develop our transportation services and that could start with safeguarding the interests of taxi drivers," he said.

The new tariff will start with 1 Bahraini dinar ($2.66) from 6am to 10pm and BD1.25 from 10pm to 6am, taking into account different prices for weekends, nights and special fares for pick-ups and passenger loads of 5 persons or more.
