ASHRAE provides IAQ guidance

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Thursday, 01 November 2007

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) has announced two standards updates intended to improve indoor air quality (IAQ) design.

Guideline 24P: Ventilation and indoor air quality in low-rise residential buildings is the companion guideline to ASHRAE Standard 62.2: Ventilation and acceptable indoor air quality in low-rise residential buildings. At the time of writing, public comments were due to be received by 29 October 2007. The proposed guideline will provide information on envelope and system design, materials selection, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance of buildings.

Topics addressed in the guideline that are not covered in Standard 62.2 include the use of carbon monoxide alarms, air distribution, air filtration and the installation of unvented combustion appliances.

In a second move ASHRAE has proposed the inclusion of demand-controlled ventilation requirements for Standard 62.1 Ventilation for acceptable indoor air quality. Seven proposed addenda to the standard are now open for public comment.

Currently the dynamic reset section of the standard allows designers to use optional controls to reset the outdoor air intake flow and/or zone minimum airflow as conditions within the system change. The proposed addendum 62G provides more specific requirements for optional system controls.
