China set for strong renewables future

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Friday, 07 December 2007

China is expected to meet or exceed its target of sourcing 15% of its energy from renewables by 2020 according to research from the Worldwatch Institute. The US environmental organisation has also predicted that if the country's current rate of commitment continues, renewable energy could provide more than 30% of the nation's energy by 2050.

China is expected to invest a total of over US$10 billion (AED36.7 billion) in new renewables capacity in 2007, second only to Germany stated Worldwatch. Worldwide investment in renewable energy in 2006 topped US$50 billion.

China is also expected to become the world's largest manufacturer of solar and wind energy equipment over the next three years following a doubling of production in 2006, with photovoltaic capacity growing to more than 1,000MW in 2006 from 350MW in 2005. The country already dominates the markets for solar hot water systems.
