Heavy emphasis on crane training

A South Korean tower cranes company has stressed the importance of training staff to operate heavy construction machinery.

In light of the recent spate of crane accidents in the UAE, Martin Park, regional branch manager, HanKook Tower Crane, said that training staff to use such equipment appropriately is ‘vital' for the construction industry.

Park spoke to Construction Week at the Big 5 PMV earlier this week, where the company is exhibiting along with partner Modern Emirates Heavy Cranes Company.

"We take the concept of training very seriously - we train staff in our Korean branch according to the requirements of the customers. We also educate and train our staff accordingly overseas," said Park.

"If you have a group of around five people, training can take a maximum of four days to complete. Staff should be taught in the correct way to operate and erect a crane when involved in the construction of a building."

With the number of construction sites in the UAE on the increase, and buildings rising above heights never reached before, HanKook and Modern Emirates Heavy Cranes Company hopes to play a major role in serving the soaring demand.

"HanKook tower cranes started in South Korea in 1978," added Park. "We found it relatively simple to adapt and enter the Middle Eastern market as crane products are in great demand with all the construction going on right now.

There are so many companies in Dubai, that require our needs - and we have been supplying products to them directly and through the Modern Emirates Heavy Crane Company."

HanKook set up shop in Dubai earlier this year.
