China Communications Construction Company Forth Harbor Engineering (CHEC) has won a contract worth US $230 million (AED 840 million) for the construction of the container terminal at Jeddah Port in Saudi Arabia.
According to a statement on the company's website, construction will begin at the start of January 2008 and is expected to take 22 months.
The client is the Saudi Trade & Export Development Company (Tusdeer).
The project will involve the construction of two gravity container terminals, a 300,000m2 back stack yard and dredging engineering.
The terminal will also be equipped to accommodate the biggest and latest container vessels under design, and will include a handling and storage area covering about 400,000m2.
An investment of $443 million has been earmarked to increase the capacity of the Jeddah Port by 45%. The project will help to maintain Jeddah's lead as the hub port of the region.
Dredging work on the project began a few months ago, with work expected to take around three years to complete. The new container terminal, which is being built on reclaimed land along the re-export zone in Jeddah International Port, is expected to handle up to two million twenty-foot-equivalent units (TEUs) of containers annually.
The terminal is also expected to contribute to the planned Land Bridge, creating a fast and efficient land-based link from the Red Sea to the Gulf.
