Aramco spends $430mn to clean up emissions

by Angela Moon and Cheon Jongwoo on Monday, 03 December 2007

Saudi Arabian state oil giant Saudi Aramco has awarded a $430 million refinery unit project to Samsung Engineering & Construction Company, the South Korean construction builder said on Monday.

The order is to build a diesel hydrotreater in Ras Tanura, a region about 70 kilometres southeast of the Jubail Industrial Complex, which is located in eastern Saudi Arabia.

The unit, to be built by June, 2010, reduces discharge of sulfur dioxide from diesel, to make it a more eco-friendly fuel.

The new unit will have a capacity of processing 100,000 barrels per day (bpd) of diesel, Samsung Engineering said in a statement.

The move for cleaner fuel comes as major refiners are becoming more aware of global enforcements of stricter environmental regulations.

Samsung Engineering has eight projects in Saudi Arabia worth a total of $4 billion, the company said. (Reuters)
