BA World Cargo expands facility

British Airways World Cargo has announced it will invest roughly US$1.7 million to expand its Perishables Handling Centre (PHC) at London Heathrow.
The new facility is to add approximately 700m2 of extra space and will include a new Border Inspection Post (BIP), which is designed for non-human consumption products of animal origin. Construction commenced in November and is due for completion by the end of February 2008, with the BIP to be opened shortly afterwards.
"The additional BIP will help speed up the inspection process, therefore clearing consignments as quickly and safely as possible, while still complying with all regulations to ensure the utmost protection of animal health in the UK," said Andrew Southey, product manager, BA World Cargo.
The new BIP, which has been approved by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), will be open to all importers, forwarders, agents, airlines and transit shed operators. It will be operated 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by the carrier's existing BIP, Christian Salvesen.
First opened in 1998, BA World Cargo's PHC handled over 115,000 tonnes of perishables goods during 2006, including fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers.
