Qatar fixed-line bids due in February 2008

Qatar, which awarded a second mobile phone licence to a group including Vodafone Group last week, said it would allow firms until February to express interest in a fixed-line licence.

Five groups and firms have already said they are interested in the licence that would end the fixed-line monopoly of Qatar Telecommunications.

The licence would be sold for a fixed fee of US$2.75m and the winner would be chosen in April.

Qatar, holder of the world's third-biggest reserves of natural gas, is home to 840,000 people and is the richest Arab country per capita.
