Saudi rejects 'politicisation' of rights

International human rights reports have made valid points which could benefit Saudi Arabia, but ‘politicise’ the issues unnecessarily, according to the head of a government body.

A spokesman for the government sponsored National Human Rights Association (NHRA) told the English language Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper the kingdom rejects the politicisation of reports issued by some human rights organisations or agencies working for Western governments. He did not mention any specific reports or organisations.

According to its vice president Zayd Al-Hussein, the NHRA exists to “Protect and bolster human rights in accordance with international standards as well as publicising them and contributing to their upholding in accordance with Islamic Sharia, in addition to making sure that it is the only government body that can give advice on human rights issues.”

Al-Hussein told Asharq Al-Awsat the association had reviewed “thousands” of cases of which it had helped to resolve “most.”
