Fleeing Abu Dhabi rent defaulters risk being stopped at the country’s borders, according to new rules from the Abu Dhabi Rent Disputes Reconciliation Committee.

Tenants who fail to pay their rents may be prevented from leaving the country, UAE daily Khaleej Times reported on Wednesday.

Juma bin Harmash Al Mansouri, director of rents division at the Commercial Buildings Department in Abu Dhabi, said the rule is part of a range of new property lease procedures.

The department will give the defaulters a 20-day grace period after the expiry of the tenancy contract to renew it and pay the required lease charges, Al Mansouri said.

If the tenant fails to pay, the department will send the case to the Rent Committee which will issue orders to the defaulters to pay the arrears, and refer the case to the police for action.

If authorities are unable to find the defaulter, the committee will blacklist the tenant and issue an All Points Bulletin, meaning the tenant will be stopped at the country’s exit points.

The defaulter may leave the country after paying the rent arrears, he said.
