by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Tuesday, 15 January 2008
Mohammed Omar Abdullah opens World Halal Expo 2007.

Hundreds of visitors from the GCC and UAE turned out for the much anticipated World Halal Expo 2007 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre from December 9-11.

The three-day expo showcased the latest Halal products on the market and gave visitors the chance to learn more about Shari'ah compliant foods, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, fashion and Islamic finance.

Exhibitors from all corners of the globe including the UK, USA, Pakistan, Croatia, Germany as well as the Gulf region were present at the event organised by Dubai-based Institute for International Research (IIR) Middle East.

"The Halal food market currently accounts for as much as 12% of the global trade in food products," said Christine Weaver, exhibition director for Halal World Expo.

"The Muslim population is projected to constitute 30% of the world's population by 2025, meaning Halal food could easily account for 20% of world trade in food products in the future.

Companies showcased new products at the event, some for the first time in the UAE and the Middle East, such as ‘Nonions', a sautéed onion pulpy paste supplied by All Needs General Trading LLC, a UAE based importer/exporter.

"We took advantage of Halal World Expo to meet new colleagues and representatives in the industry and to educate them about the advantages, quality and convenience of ‘Nonions," said Ashwin Ruchani, the director of Nonions distributor All Needs General Trading.

The Expo ran alongside the global Halal and Islamic Business Forum, which discussed key issues and trends such as marketing Halal and Islamic products in Muslim and non-Muslim countries, the need for international Halal certification standards and potential for growth in the Middle East.

With the success of Halal 2007, the exhibition is set to become an annual landmark event opening the gateway for the Middle East to access the lucrative international Halal industry.
