Apple CEO Steve Jobs at Macworld (GETTY)

Apple has unveiled the world's thinnest notebook at this year's Macworld exhibition. The new MacBook Air, which is just ¾ inches thick, runs on a specially adapted Intel Core 2 Duo processor, with a 13.3-inch LED screen and 80GB HDD.

The laptop follows the lead of the iPhone, with a multi-touch gesture enabled trackpad, that will allow users to interact with files and applications through different combinations of finger movement on the trackpad.

The MacBook Air also follows Apple's new found green principles, with a recyclable aluminium casing and mercury-free display with arsenic free-glass.

Apple announced a handful of new products and updates at Macworld, IDG's annual Mac exhibition and conference.

The only other significant hardware launch on show was the Mac Time Capsule, a wireless backup device for Mac that will be available with either a 500GB or 1TB capacity hard drive.

On the mobile front, the company announced a software update for iPhone and the iPod touch which includes a location tracker. The location tracker, which will be available in the US from Skyhook Wireless, uses triangulation of wi-fi hotpsots to locate the user and provide directions to other locations.

The Apple iTunes store also got an update, with the addition of online movie rentals. Apple has signed most of the major studios, including 20th Century Fox, The Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros., Paramount, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), Lionsgate and New Line Cinema, to provide films for time-limited download through iTunes.

Not to be outdone, Microsoft also chose to launch its Office 2008 for Mac at Macworld. The productivity package includes Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Entourage - Microsoft's Exchange client for the Mac.
