Emirates Aluminium Company Limited (EMAL) has awarded its Power Island contract to General Electrical (GE) International Operations Company.

The project is scheduled to start receiving GE equipment in December 2008, ending with the last equipment deliveries in July 2009.
Power Island is made up of a 700,000 tonne per year aluminium plant with a supporting 2,000 MW power plant.
The first phase of the project is scheduled to be completed in 2010.
The site is located close to Al Taweelah in Abu Dhabi.
The plant will be a natural gas fired combined cycle plant with supplemental duct firing and dual fuel operations.
The project will be the largest aluminium production plant in the world once both phases are completed.
