Qatar-based sports channels, Al-Kass & Al-Dawri have both invested in Thomson Grass Valley's Indigo AV Mixer and Turbo Intelligent Digital Disk recorder (iDDR) for their new mobile production studio. Abu Dhabi based systems integrator, Tek Signals was responsible for the project.
The project is part of a continuing relationship between Thomson, Tek Signals, and Al-Kass, which saw the broadcaster take the first Middle East delivery of the Thomson Grass Valley LDK 8000 HD cameras for coverage of the 2006 Asian Games, held in Doha.
The new mobile production studio system is built into a rack as a complete drive-away production centre. As well as the Indigo AV Mixer and Turbo iDDR, the kit also includes interface products from Thomson to provide a complete studio in a rack. The system is used to locally produce major sports events and other stadium functions across the region.
"Indigo is a very strong proposition as a mixer for broadcast applications," said Swarup Mukherjee of Tek Signals. "It is compact and rack-sized so it is easy to build into a mobile system, and has excellent functionality. This functionality is not found in any other small mixer."
The Indigo Mixer combines a video switcher with 3D DVE, layering, and colour correction with an audio mixer within a single unit. Video I/O is standard definition, HD, and computer resolutions, making it ideal for the eventual transition to HD. Although designed for the professional AV market with conferences and events in mind, the switcher is also built to the digital broadcast specifications and is, therefore, ideal for the Al-Kass & Al-Dawri Sports channel application.
"This is a very innovative application," commented Jeff Rosica, senior vice president of Thomson's Broadcast & Professional Solutions business unit. "Our professional AV products are built to the highest technical and operational standards, yet are available at good price points. We are delighted to see broadcasters like Al-Kass & Al-Dawri take advantage of this."
