Real estate developer Al Barari yesterday unveiled its new private sector initiative aimed at encouraging sustainable development in the UAE.

Called Greenworks, the initiative unites three companies: 2nd Nature Landscape Design, Sustainable Earth, and Greenworks Nurseries.

The three firms will tackle a range of issues including the production of organic soil materials and plants, water recycling, green investments, and green community developments through the initiative, the firm said.

"In order for the UAE to become a leader in sustainability it will be through the joint efforts of the Government and the private sector," Al Barari chairman Za'al Mohammed Za'al said. "I believe that we have come to a point in our history where the agenda of sustainability and corporate responsibility is not only central to business strategy but will increasingly become a critical driver in business growth."

Al Barari cited its Al Barari resort project as an example of sustainable design. Over 80% of the development is devoted to nature, the firm claims.
