Exhibitor profiles

Arab Health is back and this year's event promises more conferences, seminars and exhibitors than ever before. Here are some of the companies worth a visit between January 28 and 31.
APC Cardiovascular
The world's first physiologically based technology that is capable of significantly reducing the risk of patient morbidity and mortality is to be launched at Arab Health 2008, claim its manufacturers.
The minimally invasive ‘HeartSmart' haemodynamic monitoring software is used to optimise blood flow by providing virtually instantaneous readings for a number of important haemodynamic variables, including cardiac index and stroke volume. This leads to a reduction in post-operative complications and the length of stay in hospital - benefits that both save lives and potentially lead to a significant saving in healthcare costs.
Available from UK based APC Cardiovascular, the software displays continuous real time information on all blood flow variables; using physiological parameters of heart rate, central venous pressure, blood pressure and core body temperature. This allows anaesthetists or medical staff to optimise the blood flow by way of goal directed therapy; determining the oxygen supply and demand required by the cells.
HeartSmart can be easily introduced through all hospital departments with no additional equipment costs or change in nursing or medical practice; with only half a day's training allowing healthcare professionals to perform the procedure.
Dr Anthony Hughes, consultant in anaesthesia and critical care and director of intensive care at Bradford Royal Infirmary where HeartSmart is used, said: "The HeartSmart adapts well to the busy working healthcare environment at Bradford Royal Infirmary, as it takes a short amount of time to train our staff in its use; lowering the risk of complications and thus, speeding up patient recovery time.
Cryo-Save Arabia
Cord blood banking is becoming increasingly popular with expecting parents all over the world today. In Dubai, expecting parents can turn to Cryo-Save Arabia for the private storage of their child's precious cord blood stem cells.
Cryo-Save Arabia is modelled after Belgian-based Cryo-Save, the largest and most experienced cord blood stem cell bank in Europe. Cryo-Save Arabia is licensed and regulated by DuBiotech and is subject to their stringent regulations and inspections.
Scientists from the Research Department of Cryo-Save Group NV, along with the University of Cologne (DE) have reportedly developed a new scientifically validated method to collect adult mesenchymal stem cells (‘MSCs') from the lining of umbilical cord tissue. This revolutionary new approach allows the collection and cryo-preservation of very high quantities of valuable mesenchymal stem cells without invasive surgery.
Cryo-Save Arabia is sponsoring the Obs-Gyne conference during Arab Health Congress 2008, with two guest speakers from the Newcastle Centre for Cord Blood, Institute of Human Genetics, Newcastle University, UK; Dr. Nick Forraz will be tackling practical points of stem cell collection and viability guidelines, while Dr. Collin McGuckin will discuss emerging stem cell applications.
Cryo-Save Arabia can be visited during Arab Health Congress 2008 at the Obs-Gyne Conference.
Downs Surgical
The UK's premier surgical instrument manufacturer, Downs Surgical, will once again be exhibiting at Arab Health to showcase its range of devices. Downs Surgical, which have been manufacturing surgical instruments for more than 120 years, will exhibit its full range of products, with particular focus on its ENT range and orthopaedic implants; particularly the Huckstep system.
Downs has seen a rising interest in its ENT range in the Middle East following an international event held there in March 2007, organised by Downs Surgical and the Royal College of Surgeons England.
The event, held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, saw more than 70 senior surgeons from throughout the Middle East exchange the latest advances in ENT surgery with key surgeons from the UK.
Steve Spurgin, international business manager of Downs Surgical, said: "We've been exhibiting at Arab Health now for many years and it has been key in allowing us to source distributors all over the Middle East; with 2007's event seeing us establish new partners in Saudi, Libya and Iran. At Arab Health 2008, we look forward to meeting with current distributors and creating new international partnerships.
