Terna tipped for Qatar mall project

Greek construction firm, Terna GEK Group, is tipped to win a US $197 million (QAR 720 million) contract to build a shopping mall in Doha, Qatar.

The project, to be called Marqab Mall, will be spread over 205,000m2. Construction is due to start in May and has a completion schedule of 24 months.

The mall will be made up of two basements, a ground floor, mezzanine and three floors for retail outlets, cinemas and other amenities.

The project is being developed under his excellency Hamad Bin Jassim Al Jaboor Al Thani.

The consultant is Qatar-based Arab Engineering Bureau.

This is the second shopping mall contract that Terna has been awarded in the last few months.

The company won a $208 million deal from Sharjah-based JMS Development in December to build the Al Rayan Complex in Sharjah.

Construction began in early January and is expected to take 30 months to complete.

The company is also bidding for more work across the region.Figures released at end of 2006 cited that shopping mall development in the GCC was expected to grow by 140% between 2007 and 2010.

Mega-mall developments in the UAE over the last few years include Dubai Festival City and the ongoing Dubai Mall, Marina Mall and Mirdiff Mall.

Nakheel also plans to build a mall on the Palm Deira.

Billions of dollars have also been ploughed into new mall construction and upgrading in Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.
