e-Permit will speed seafreight through Dubai ports

The e-Permit scheme will cut the number of permits that have to applied for before shipments can be released into Dubai

Dubai eGovernment today announced a new joint project to improve the speed at which shipments pass through Dubai ports.

The e-Permit scheme is a collaboration between Dubai eGovernment, Dubai Municipality, Dubai Customs, Dubai Police and Adobe Systems. The scheme will automate and consolidate the permits system which currently governs import and release of goods into Dubai.

There are currently ten different types of permit that are required for different types of shipment, and the e-Permit scheme will create single permit that will be routed through Dubai customs, allowing shipments to be released as soon as inspections are completed.

Salem Al Shair, Director eServices, Dubai eGovernment, said: "We are pleased to launch the e-Permit service together with our partners, and we are very positive about the extensive adoption and success of the service in Dubai, which is one of the busiest import and export points in the Middle East. Through the e-Permit solution, an initial estimate of approximately 6,000 transactions can be completed online, with a growth rate of 5-15 per cent every month."

The system is based on Adobe's LiveCycle Enterprise Suite, a J2EE-based system that includes document creation and management. Adobe's Middle East distribution partner SOMAC Information Technology will deploy the solution; while the Ministry of Finance will handle revenue collection.

LiveCycle ES leverages the reach of Adobe PDF and Flash technologies and enables a new class of customer engagement applications, which Dubai eGovernment needs to help government entities create as well as deliver rich applications and processes that extend beyond the Dubai eGovernment enterprise," said Giuseppe Verrini, Adobe managing director for Southern Europe, Mediterranean, Middle East and Africa.
