R&M goes on the LAN

Swiss cabling major, Reichle & De-Massari (R&M) has launched the CATV FO solution, especially designed for television broadcasting in local data networks over a fibre-optic network backbone.

This multimedia solution can be used in structured cabling as campus, building and floor distributor and can be integrated into existing networks. The solution complements the CATVsolution 862/8 for copper cabling introduced four years ago. It is used in 19-inch distributors, connected with coax connections or LAN and, with a few level adjustments, is operational within one minute.

While coax infrastructures require HF amplifiers and power supply, signals in fibre-optic infrastructures can be transmitted over longer links without additional amplifiers. In OS1 cabling, the CATVsolution can bridge distances of 2000 meters and, if necessary, even longer links. In OM3 cabling, a 350-meter LAN transmission range is feasible and, in OM2, 600 metres.

As a building distributor, the panel has a coax input and eight fibre- optic outlets. It converts the TV signal in the LAN for transmission. The counterpart, the floor distributor, has a fibre-optic input and eight RJ45 outlets. A coax connection can thus be distributed to 64 receivers. The floor distributor feeds the signal into the horizontal structured cabling and can bridge distances of up to 90 meters.

Finally, a balun patch cord connects the LAN outlet with the receiver. The built-in impedance adjustment converts the 100Ω signal again into a 75Ω coax signal. Additional adapters are not needed. Individual terminal devices can also be directly connected to a gateway exchange.

The CATVsolution FO is compatible with the high resolution HDTV television technology. The device covers the frequency range from 47 to 870 MHz. It can be used in single-mode or multi-mode infrastructures. The optical receiver also processes wavelengths of 1290 to 1600nm.
