Egypt net nightmare to last 10 more days

Egyptian internet disruption caused by damage to undersea cables will last another 10 days, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology said on Saturday.

"Disruptions to the internet network will continue for at least another 10 days," a statement carried by the official MENA news agency said.

A repair ship was expected early Tuesday to begin work to fix the two cables in the Mediterranean Sea. They were damaged on Wednesday, rupturing connections not only in Egypt but also thousands of kilometres away.

"Around 55% of the internet network is now up and running," the statement said, after emergency teams were formed to find alternative connection routes.

A third cable, off the coast of Dubai, was also damaged, its owner Flag Telecom said Saturday, but Egypt said the latest break did not affect its internet connections.
