Dubai Cargo Village has revealed it handled a total of 1.66 million tonnes of freight in 2007.
A 10.96% increase from 2006 when it handled over 1.5 million tonnes, the cargo hub next to Dubai International Airport has achieved year on year double digit growth since its inception back in 1991.
"Cargo has enjoyed exceptional growth right from the first year the facility was established over a decade and half ago, and has been limited to a certain extent by available capacity," said Ali Al Jallaf, vice president, cargo unit, Dubai Cargo Village.
"Soon with the completion of the expansion works at the Cargo Mega Terminal, I am certain there will be a further spurt in growth of cargo in Dubai," he added.
Dubai Cargo Village's peak period for handling freight in 2007 was November and December, when it recorded 149,527 and 147,754 tonnes respectively. Its highest growth over the corresponding period in 2006 was 17.3% in February.
Import, export and transhipment constituted 1.59 million tonnes of the freight handled, but more notably mail and courier shipments rose by 53% contributing to 77,765 tonnes.
Last year's growth has been partly attributed to the hub's marketing campaign, which led to an increase in the number of cargo agencies and airlines operating throughout the facility.
In light of current growth rates, Dubai Cargo Village has estimated handling a total of 1.8 million tonnes in 2008.
"Dubai Cargo Village was ranked 11th on ACI's list of the world's cargo hubs last year, a decade and a half ago it was positioned 61st."
"We expect cargo tonnage at the cargo village to continue growing at the current rate, transforming Dubai from a regional centre to a global hub," said Abdullah Bin Khediya, senior general manager, Dubai Cargo Village.
