Canon ups the pixel count

Camera and printer specialist Canon has updated its digital SLR camera line with the launch of its new EOS 450D. This model replaces the 400D as the top model in the firm's entry-level SLR product family.

The 450D, also known as the Digital Rebel XSi in the American market and EOS Kiss X2 in Japan, features a 12.2-megapixel CMOS sensor and a three-inch LCD screen (compared to its brethren's 10.1-megapixel sensor and a 2.5-inch LCD).

Canon's new SLR also offers a feature known as ‘Live View', which allows the camera to broadcast a live video feed to a PC via a USB 2 connection. Canon's higher-end models, the EOS 40D and 1D MK III, have long offered this technology, but the 450D is the first entry-level SLR model to include it.

The EOS 450D can be purchased as a body alone - without the lens - or in kit format with an 18-55 IS (Image Stabilisation) lens. This option also makes the EOS 450D the first Canon model in this market segment to be sold, in kit form, with an IS lens. IS lenses boast an aspherical element that Canon claims offers much improved image quality.

In terms of media compatibility, Canon has dropped Compact Flash (CF) media in favour of SD and SDHC. This new camera will also feature a larger, higher capacity battery than its predecessor when it goes on sale in April. In kit format (body and lens) the 450D is expected to retail for around $899, whilst the body alone will cost $799.
