South African telecom operator MTN is upgrading its core network to increase the speed of its broadband services. The company is upgrading download speeds on its HSDPA network to 3.6Mbps, compared with its existing speed of 1.8Mbps, and peak speeds of 7.2Mbps will also be available in certain commercial areas.
MTN also anticipates that High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) speeds of up to 1.4Mbps will be achieved in the coming months. This will be rolled out countrywide using a phased approach, on the entire MTN 3G/WCDMA network.
Key metropolitan areas will be the first to feel the effects of the faster network, with other regions following, according to MTN.
"Since mid 2007 we have been in a test phase and now MTN feels confident to present this to the market," said Ashraff Paruk, head of strategy and product innovation, MTN. "In the test environment, speeds in excess of 3Mbps have been achieved, with uplink speeds in the region of 1.4Mbps."
"We are confident that this upgrade to the MTN 3G network will enable easier and quicker broadband access to MTN subscribers. As the evolution continues during 2008, we can expect to see MTN launch new bandwidth intensive products and services on the HSDPA platform."
