Lufthansa Cargo delivers romance

Lufthansa spreads the love this Valentines Day.

Lufthansa Cargo will deliver roughly 700 tonnes of roses in the lead up to Valentines Day on 14^th February 2008.

Mainly deriving from Kenya, Columbia, Ecuador and Ethiopia, the flowers are transported across to Europe using the German carrier's freighters and belly compartments on passenger aircrafts.

"Lufthansa Cargo alone flies in more than 500 tonnes of roses for Valentine's Day from Kenya, one of the world's largest flower-exporting countries. The cut-flower industry is one of the biggest employers in rural areas," said Thomas Dettmer, regional sales manager for Lufthansa Cargo in East Africa.

"The flowers are picked at rose farms in the Kenyan uplands in the morning, and then transported during the day to Nairobi, where they are loaded onto a Lufthansa Cargo MD-11F late in the evening. Every morning at seven o'clock, a Lufthansa Cargo freighter arriving from Nairobi touches down at Frankfurt Airport," he added.

To ensure the flowers reach their final destination in full bloom, a constant temperature of between two and four degrees Celsius must be maintained throughout the entire logistics chain. Lufthansa believes its Perishable Centre at Frankfurt Airport, helps reduce transit time allowing the sensitive cargo to be delivered to florists as quickly as possible.
