THAI Airways is launching twice daily flights to the island of Samui, with convenient connections from Dubai.

The first flight will depart from Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok on February 15. The 149-seater B734 will offer economy and royal silk class in both morning and evening.

In 2007 the passenger terminal in Samui Airort was extended, increasing capacity to handle up to 16,000 passengers a day. According to the Department of Civil Aviation, 1.18 million passengers passed through in 2006 and the expansion has been designed to cope with the predicted rise of traffic.

Previously the island was only served by Thailand's largest privately owned carrier, Bangkok Airways. Company officials at THAI are confident the new route will encourage domestic travel, particularly to the southern resorts.

Pandit Chanapi, THAI's executive vice president, commercial department, said: "This is a breakthrough for THAI. Samui is a premier destination. We aim to make the route very competitive by marketing it to tourists from cities currently served by THAI connecting through Suvarnabhumi Airport." He added: "In addition THAI's policy is to expand its network and connections in order to provide seamless travel and convenience for its passengers."
