Lebanese mobile operator Alfa is to enhance its services for the Beirut area with an overhaul of its network infrastructure.

Alfa will replace its existing base stations with new technology, to improve coverage and capacity for the city.

The contract to update the network has been awarded to Nokia Seimens Networks, with work due for completion by the middle of this year.

The new base stations will also reduce power consumption, and will also enable 3G services with a minor upgrade.

Ineke Botter, managing director and CEO of Alfa, commented: "It is our aim to provide our subscribers in Greater Beirut with the latest technology and better network coverage and we are convinced that, with the new Nokia Siemens technology, Alfa will be in the position to develop novel data services for its subscribers."
