Virgin Atlantic is set to make the first bio-fuel flight by a commercial airline on February 24.
In conjunction with Boeing the airline will fly Virgin Atlantic 747 from London Heathrow to Amsterdam to demonstrate the use sustainable aircraft fuel, as part of its drive to reduce the environmental impact of its flights.
"This breakthrough will help Virgin Atlantic to fly its planes using clean fuel sooner than expected. The demonstration flight will give us crucial knowledge that we can use to dramatically reduce our carbon footprint," said Sir Richard Branson, president, Virgin Atlantic.
"Virgin Group pledged to invest all its profits from its transportation companies towards developing clean energy and with this breakthrough we are well down the path to achieving our goals."
Last November Virgin Atlantic became the first airline to offer passengers the chance to purchase carbon offsets onboard it flights.
