Microsoft muscles in on mobile Web software
by Quintin Smith on Wednesday, 05 March 2008
Microsoft has signed a deal with Nokia to implement Silverlight, the company's rich web application plug-in, on Nokia handsets.
The plug-in allows developers to create (and consumers to use) applications that work independantly of web browsers, operating systems and handsets.
This makes Silverlight a competitor to Adobe's Flash software, which currently powers the Web applications of most mobile phones.
Silverlight will appear first on high-end Nokia smartphones using the Symbian OS, starting with any Symbian phones utilising the S60 platform such as the upcoming N96. S60 is currently the most popular software on the Smartphone market, holding a 53% market share.
The plug-in will appear on other Web-enabled Nokia phones at an undisclosed later date.
Microsoft has a difficult fight ahead of them- Adobe already has agreements with 18 of the top 20 global device manufacturers. Adobe also claims its mobile version of Flash, Flash Lite, has already shipped on over 450 million devices.
