New Dubai hotel classification focuses on leisure
by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer on Friday, 07 March 2008
Dubai's hotel classification system is set to undergo an overhaul in 2008, with several new leisure-based categories to be introduced.
The new classification system - which is being rolled out by Dubai's Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) - is expected to be introduced in the second quarter of this year.
Sources close to the process have revealed that hotels will either be classified as leisure, city/business or ‘other' properties, with several sub-categories within each sector.
The leisure category will include niche accommodation such as theme park hotels, beach resorts, desert hotels and island resorts, while the ‘other' sector will include spa and wellness hotels and heritage hotels.
It is believed that the classification system will also include a ‘floating lodging' category encompassing boat hotels and a ‘tourist accommodation' category featuring sports hotels as a sub sector.
The sources revealed that international classification systems were studied in the creation of the new system.
A spokesperson for the DTCM said the hotel classification system was currently undergoing industry consultation before being introduced.
