'Supercar on the sea' zooms into Dubai

by Talal Malik on Sunday, 09 March 2008
SUPERCAR BOAT: The world's fastest production diesel engine powerboat, the XSR48, is to make its Middle East debut on March 11 at the Dubai International Boat Show.

The world's fastest production diesel engine powerboat, the XSR48, is to make its Middle East debut on Tuesday at the Dubai International Boat Show.

Dubbed ‘the most beautiful thing ever created by man' by BBC Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson, the XSR48 will be at the exhibition, which runs from March 11-15 at Dubai International Marine Club.

'The XSR48 is a union between the world's top designers, engineers and craftsmen to create the perfect platform for harnessing state of the art design, technology and ultimate power,' said Ian Sanderson, chief executive of British company, XSMG Marine, which is bringing the powerboat to Dubai.

'The pure design of the XSR48 gives a bold statement of performance and style which will be evident when visitors see it on the water.'

A prototype of the XSR48, priced at $2.4 million, launched in December 2006 at the Monaco Yacht Show and with the first production model launched in September 2007.

Industry experts have labelled the powerboat the 'Bugatti Veyron of the sea', due to its superior yacht and supercar features.

Capable of seating six people, the powerboat can race at over 70 knots (130 kph) in standard form, rising to 85 knots (157 kph) with more power and a lighter specification.
Its two engines also pack a heavyweight 800 brake horse power punch in standard form - the same as Sportec's Porsche 911 sports car released in 2006.

With a special glass roof running the entire deck length, the XSR48 also has more than 40% internal cabin space than a conventionally constructed boat, allowing a fully-fitted accommodation area with double berth, luxury sofas and entertainment zone.

‘The XSR48 is the ultimate,' said Sanderson. ‘It delivers the exhilaration of a supercar on water, and gives the opportunity to experience complete oceanic freedom with no boundaries.'
