Intel 4-series chipset-based boards arriving soon

Motherboards based on Intel's new core-logic chipset family, known as the 4-series, will hit store shelves by quarter two of this year, Windows Middle East has learnt.

Attending CeBIT - one of the largest IT shows in the world - in Hanover, Germany last week, Windows staff confirmed with vendors such as Abit, Albatron, Asus Biostar, Foxconn, and Gigabyte that boards will be available within two months time.

Intel's new chipset family consists of the budget-aimed G45 and G43 (both with integrated graphics support), the performance-orientated P45, and lastly the high-end X48.

With the exception of the G43 which is limited to 1066MHz Front Side Bus (FSB) support, the rest of the chipsets from this family all support running at 1333MHz. All the chipsets are compatible with DDR3 RAM.

In terms of the differences between the G45 and G43, the G45 has the more advanced integrated graphics chipset, known as the GMA X4500 HD. The HD signifies this chipset is capable of hardware accelerated H.264 (High Definition) decoding, meaning the GPU will off-load intensive decoding work from the computer's processor thus freeing it to concentrate on other tasks. The G43 in the meanwhile is equipped with the GMA X4500 chipset, which offers all of the features of the GMA X4500 HD with the exception of its HD decoding abilities.

The G45 and G43 both offer support for a multitude of display interfaces including the current DVI and HDMI ports. The upcoming Display Port interface is also supported.

All the chipsets are fabricated on Intel's 65nm manufacturing process whereas the last chipset family, the 3-series, was produced on the 90nm process. All of the manufacturers Windows spoke to claim the newer, more advanced process will mean the new chipsets will need significantly less power.
