Telecommunications giant Etisalat this weekend saluted the 60 crew-members of the ‘Cable Ship Etisalat’ and the ‘Cable Ship Niwa’ for completing the dangerous job of repairing the regional undersea cables that were cut on February 1st.

The damage to the cables left many areas in the region without internet access or international voice transfit for days.

H.E. Mohammad Al Qamzi, CEO at Etisalat said: “Etisalat was unaffected by the recent cable issue in the Gulf, but many of our peers in the region had their connectivity seriously degraded. I congratulate the crews of the Cable Ships Etisalat and Niwa and recognize that their work was critical to protecting the rapidly expanding economies in the region.”

Meanwhile, Omar Bin Kalban, CEO & Managing Director of E-marine PJSC, an Etisalat company, said that: “This was an extremely difficult period for the region’s telecommunications industry.”

While the mission of the repair ships was initially delayed until February 4th due to dangerous weather, the ships still faced 14 waves while out at sea.

Cable Ship Etisalat completed its mission and returned to port on February 10, while Cable Ship Niwa concluded its mission on February 14.
