Hotelier Middle East talks to BurJuman Rotana Suites' recently promoted assistant marketing and communications manager Carla Adwan about her love of the job and cases of mistaken identity.
What qualities do you have that make you the right choice for the role of assistant marketing and communications manager?
The hotel industry is a very challenging field but also provides a rewarding career. The passion I have for my job qualifies me best for the role. I am also proactive, detail oriented, assertive, results oriented and capable of developing new ideas. These are the qualities that one should posses if one wishes to excel in the marketing field.
What makes a good assistant marketing and communications manager?
Someone that can handle multiple tasks and think outside the box, possesses confidence in their professional knowledge and has the ability to get the work done quickly and efficiently; taking all responsibilities seriously while being aware of mistakes.
In addition, finding out what customers want, developing a strategy to satisfy those needs and then implementing it.
What's the most challenging aspect of your job?
The pre-opening was a very big challenge for me. From preparing all the marketing and communications plans to the official opening ceremony. After we opened the property new challenges started with managing the marketing campaign and opening the property successfully, as well as positioning correctly in the local market.
What do you enjoy most about working in hotels?
Direct interaction with people is what I really enjoy. From events, to corporate parties for guests, to the interaction with the media, this is what enables me to enjoy what I'm doing.
What has been the most unusual experience you have had during your career in marketing?
I would say meeting the wrong person in the restaurant. One day I had a meeting with an editor of a magazine. I didn't know what the person looked like. I directly approached a gentleman who was sitting in The Gallery having coffee. I invited myself to sit on his table and started presenting myself with confidence.
On top of that, I started to explain about our suites and meeting rooms. After around 15 minutes, he started laughing and informed me that I was talking to the wrong person. I felt a little bit embarrassed, but the gentleman was enjoying the entire scenario.
Where in the world would you most like to work and why?
Hospitality growth all over the world is fascinating, and the market continues to grow each year. I will decide that when I decide to move somewhere else in the world.
If you could stay in any hotel in the world, where it would be and why?
I have many destinations in mind, but probably a quiet resort where I would be able to find peace of mind.
Away from work, what do you like to do to relax?
Chill out in cafes, have some drinks or go for a salsa dance.
