Saudi firm sued for $1.3mn over software piracy
by Dylan Bowman on Monday, 17 March 2008
A Saudi company is being sued for 5 million Saudi riyals ($1.3 million) by the Business Software Alliance (BSA) for copyright infringement after it was found using pirated software.
The lawsuit calls for the cancellation of the unnamed company’s commercial registration and an increase in its penalties and prison term, the Saudi Gazette daily reported on Monday.
The claim follows a substantial media campaign by the BSA, which represents the interests of international software companies, warning the public of the penalties for using pirated goods.
The BSA estimates that 52% of companies in Saudi Arabia do business using illegally obtained software, and that this is costing the software companies some $200 million every year.
