Heavy fog warning for Dubai
by Amy Glass on Monday, 24 March 2008
Heavy mist and foggy conditions will continue in Dubai this week, with motorists being warned of reduced visibility and urged to drive carefully.
The Dubai Meteorological Office has forecast extensive mist and fog until Wednesday morning, following Sunday’s hazy conditions that reduced visibility to 100 metres in some areas of the emirate.
Authorities have been keen to warn motorists of possible adverse conditions as early as possible to reduce the number of accidents caused because of the adverse conditions.
Earlier this month around 200 vehicles were involved in a mass pile-up on the Abu Dhabi to Dubai highway, caused by speeding and heavy fog, in which three people died and 347 were injured, the UAE's worst on record.
Authorities have even proposed sending people advance weather warnings via text message.
The Met office said the foggy conditions should clear by Wednesday morning, with Thursday and Friday expected to be sunny and hot.
The current foggy environment in the UAE is not uncommon for March and is caused by low winds, high humidity and cool night temperatures.
Police consider highway closure
Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway could close during heavy fog to prevent future accidents, officials say.
