Steering wheels and pedals

by Jason Saundalkar & Cleona Godinho on Monday, 24 March 2008

A wheel and pedal set is the best way to truly experience driving simulations. Here are our current tarmac-munching favourites...

Logitech G25 Racing Wheel

The G25 is Logitech's highest end racing set. It includes a steering wheel that can be table mounted, a proper gear selector and a set of grippy foot pedals that literally sticks to the floor.

The steering wheel differentiates itself from others through being capable of 900- degrees of rotation. This translates into two and a half turns from centre to the left or right; identical to the rotation a real car's steering wheel can handle.

This racing wheel also features two Force Feedback motors that work to accurately other words, thanks to this resistance/vibration technology you'll feel every turn, bump and curb you hit during your frenzied races.

Best of all for F1 freaks, the G25 features F1 style ‘paddle' shifters, which can be used to change gears without taking your hands off the wheel. Neat.

Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel

It took Microsoft a while but the firm finally got its Wireless Racing Wheel onto the market last year. Finished in white and gray this package is attractive, and looks aside there's plenty more on offer too. As you might have guessed from its telling name, this set is wireless, meaning it has the same range as the 360's standard wireless controllers.

This means you can play your racing games from wherever is comfiest, rather than readjusting your set-up to suit the length of the cable supplied. Another trick the 360 Racing Wheel offers is the fact that it is both table and lap mountable, so you really can race from wherever you like.

Like the G25 this wheel features F1 ‘paddle' shifters, but it doesn't feature a G25-like dedicated gearbox , which might put off some users.
